A Vital Resource for LGBTQ+ Aging:

What is SAGE?

At HealthSense, our mission is to provide expert, compassionate care that honors the whole person. For our LGBTQ+ clients, this includes understanding and connecting them with organizations that address their unique life experiences. SAGE is one of the most important resources in the country.

What is SAGE?

  • SAGE is the country's oldest and largest non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) older adults.

  • Founded in 1978, SAGE has been a pioneer in building community, providing services, and advocating for the rights of LGBTQ+ elders. Their work is built on the belief that all older adults deserve to age with the dignity, respect, and support they are entitled to.

Why SAGE is Essential

LGBTQ+ older adults are trailblazers who have fought for the rights many enjoy today. However, they also face unique challenges as they age:

  • They are twice as likely to be single and live alone.

  • They are four times less likely to have children, who often serve as traditional caregivers.

  • Many report a legitimate fear of discrimination in housing, healthcare, and long-term care settings, which can prevent them from seeking help.

SAGE was created to be the answer to these challenges—a trusted advocate, a source of vital services, and a "chosen family" for a generation that deserves to age safely and proudly.

What SAGE Provides

SAGE’s work is a comprehensive model of support that includes services, advocacy, and education.

  • Direct Services & Community: SAGE provides direct, life-saving services to thousands of older adults in New York City and South Florida. This includes running SAGE Centers—safe, welcoming community hubs that offer hot meals, wellness programs, arts, culture, and social events.

  • Housing & Caregiving Support: They offer specialized resources for navigating affordable, LGBTQ-friendly housing and provide support and resources for caregivers.

  • National Advocacy: SAGE is a powerful voice in Washington D.C. and in state capitals, fighting for inclusive policies and legal protections to ensure LGBTQ+ elders are not discriminated against in healthcare, housing, or employment.

  • Cultural Competency Training (SAGECare): Through its renowned SAGECare program, SAGE trains healthcare providers and aging-service organizations on how to create a welcoming, affirming, and culturally competent environment for LGBTQ+ clients.

Our Commitment

HealthSense is proud to partner with and support the work of SAGE. We share a deep, fundamental commitment to ensuring that all older adults receive care that is not only clinically excellent but also compassionate, respectful, and affirming of who they are.

SAGE is an indispensable resource for our community, our clients, and our team as we work together to build a more inclusive and just world for people to age with dignity.
